Ao Nang Shopping
What to Buy and Where to Shop in Ao Nang
Shopping in Ao Nang is not as intense or diverse as in Bangkok or Phuket. But then again everything in Ao Nang is more laidback and less in-your-face (except for some pesky tailors of course) than the norm for Thai beach holiday destinations.
There are countless stores selling copied T-shirts, flip-flops, beach hats and fake brand-name goods such as diving Rolexes that you shouldn’t wear in the shower and Levi’s with a short life expectancy. Depending on your home country you should be wary of buying fake brand-name bags and fashion accessories as customs are cracking down on illegal copies.
Except for fixed-prices shops such as opticians, supermarkets and name-brand shops haggling is part of the whole shopping deal here and shop owners will size you up and try to figure out how much you can afford. You’ll see that starting prices drop drastically once you show that you know how much an item is worth.
Ananya
This is a classy boutique selling silk cushion covers, elegant bags, scarves, ceramics, handicrafts and many Thai silk and pashima handmade products. The charming owner, Khun Oranut, will assist you in choosing items to suit your tastes.
Open: 09:00 – 23:00
Location: Beach Road opposite Krabi Resort
Tel: +66 (0) 898730554
Beachwear
Further down the road from Ananya you can stock up on beachwear, beach toys, snorkeling equipment and all things marine. Here haggling is needed as the opening prices are somewhat elevated. As always smooth the transaction with a pleasant manner and a smile.
Open: 10:00 – 22:00
Location: Beach Road next to Beccofino Italian Restaurant
King’s Fashion
As with opticians, there are many tailor shops in Ao Nang. King’s Fashion is one of the longer-established ones and one which does not have the annoying habit of posting touts outside. The shop offers free transportation to customers and a 24-hour service, although it is wiser to take things slower with several fittings to make sure the cut is just right. Major credit cards accepted.
Open: 10:00 – 21:00
Location: Central Beach Road
Tel: +66 (0) 18462980; +66 (0) 75-638067
Chock Dee Handmade
Chock Dee (meaning ‘Good Luck’) sells beautiful jewelry, precious stones, old beads, boxes, necklaces, bracelets, rings and even fossils. There are two branches along the Beach Road, both attractive and impeccably presented. Silver and gold jewelry is made to order and while prices are higher than other nearby outlets the quality is tip-top and it certainly doesn’t hurt to haggle them down a little.
Open: 10:00 – 22:00
Location: Central Beach Road and in ‘Walking Street shopping arcade’
Tel: +66 (0) 75-695401
Phranang Leather
Mostly featuring bags, wallets and accessories – Phranang Leather is not the sort of place that rustles up a sturdy pair of cowboy boots in a few days. Nevertheless it does excel in well-crafted goods and is worth a browse among its high-quality offerings.
Open: 12:00 – 22:00
Location: Beach Road
Thailandia Night Plaza
Thailandia Night Plaza is actually open during the day as well. It’s an ambitious business undertaking, aiming to raise the standards of the somewhat one-dimensional shopping opportunities in Ao Nang. With fashion and accessory boutiques, a food court with wall-mounted TVs and even a ‘Fish Pedicure Spa’ (fast becoming a worldwide craze) this represents a more relaxed shopping experience.
Open: 10:00 – late
Location: Opposite McDonald’s on the main road heading out of Ao Nang to Krabi Town
Pharmacies
There are, at the very least, five pharmacies in Ao Nang. Most pharmacists are English speaking and have extensive knowledge of what they stock. Over-the-counter drugs are far more available in Thailand than in the west and the typical Thai approach to most maladies is to swallow a bunch of antibiotics. If you are fairly up to date with what ails you go ahead and purchase but when in doubt consult the pharmacist, or better yet visit a doctor.
Beautiful Optic
Beautiful Optic is just one of several opticians along the Beach Road and the shop has many similarities to the others. It is worth mentioning that eyewear in Thailand represents a major bargain area. Computerized eye testing is free with no obligation to buy and if you compare and contrast what’s on offer in Ao Nang’s many opticians you will discover some serious discounts and many ‘two for the price of one’ offers.
Open: 10:00 – 22:00
Location: Just before the bend in the Beach Road. Opticians are easily found in Ao Nang
