Krabi Town Shopping

Where to Shop & What to Buy in Krabi Town

Once upon a time, just about the only things for sale in Krabi Town that were any interest to visitors were fishermen’s pants and sarongs. Those days are long gone, what with the advent of three major satellite shopping malls housing hundreds of brand-name outlets as well as Krabi’s (thankfully) slow waking up to tourist needs and wants.

Krabi centre itself has retained its charms and still displays its archetypal provincial Thai town personality with roads teeming with shops displaying such diverse items as lawn mowers to underwear to children’s toys to motorbike parts – all under one roof.

Krabi Town Walking Street Krabi Town Walking Street

If you like Thai cuisine, you should check out some of the many local markets nearby your Krabi accommodation. It’s a lot of fun to see all the herbs and ingredients used for spicy tom yam soup or the lovely green curry you had the other night. Read More...

On the corner of Chaofa and Maharaja Soi 6 stands an interesting shop that is chock-full of Buddha images of every size, delicate porcelain ornaments, intricately decorated wooden masks, wooden elephants and painted fans. It’s all rather fascinating, if only just to have a look. This is bargaining territory so do not hesitate to use your bartering and haggling skills.

Opening Hours: 09:00 – 21:00
Location: Krabi centre Chaofa and Maharaja Roads

Big C

Big C is a ubiquitous green-and-red shopping mall found throughout Thailand. The kernel of this warehouse-sized building is the actual Big C supermarket that sells such exotica as washing machines, electronic goods, fresh and preserved food, cheap clothing, basic children’s toys and such. Big C’s satellite shops are much more interesting.

Try Supersports for marked-down brand name goods, Bata, Boots, KT Optic, Top Charoen Optical, Big Camera – all these stores sell exactly the same goods as in the West – only at marked down prices. For local products you should check out the several souvenir stands, Roberto Boutique, Oriental Princess Cosmetics and the OTOP handicraft outlets. Upstairs is a gold shop with set prices. Hungry shoppers can eat at the MK Restaurant, the mall’s food court or fill up at Mister Donut while kids can let loose in the nearby play area. Big C has acres of parking, a bank with an ATM as well as clean public conveniences.

Opening Hours: 09:00 – 23:00
Location: Phet Kasem Road, Route 4 to the airport

Downtown Krabi Shopping

Krabi Town, with its parallel streets, markets, shops full to bursting with such diverse items as textiles, farming tools, children’s toys, household goods and machinery, resembles one large colourful bazaar.

The charm of the place is that it doesn’t put on airs or graces – it’s simply a functional, typical provincial Thai country town. You won’t be picking up the latest Parisian or Milanese fashions here but you can buy name brand goods in the bigger shops for a fraction of their Western asking prices.

Krabi Markets

Krabi has both a day and a night market. They’re both great for discovering bizarrely shaped fruit and vegetables, buying delicious and cheap Muslim-influenced takeaways and snacks, people watching and of course shopping. Seeing as the surrounding shops handle the hard goods, the sole purpose of these markets is to supply fresh food produce. Read More...

Krabi Town Walking Street

Krabi Town Walking Street (Thanon Khon Dern in Thai) is certainly the most important shopping event in Krabi Town. It is held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 17:00 to 22:00 in Soi Maharaj 8 and on the 2,000sqm plaza situated right behind Vogue Department Store in downtown Krabi. With something like 50 stalls selling a wide range of products and street food, Krabi Town Walking Street gathers every weekend an incredibly large crowd for such a small area. Read More...

Opening Hours: Fri, Sat & Sun from 17:00-22:00
Location: Soi Maharaj 8, behind Vogue Department Store.

Maharat Sois

Running off Maharat road are a number of sois (streets) all called Maharat. These feature textile shops, tailors, haberdasheries, chemists and an almost crazy mix of household and farming goods that the locals don’t seem to have any trouble whatsoever in accepting as normal.

Outlet Village

New to Thailand, Outlet Village sells fashion and sportswear along with sports accessories. This is a positive goldmine for those who won’t be seen in public without name tags and agape alligators on their shirts, shoes and pants. Some of the name brands featured here are Adidas, Le Coq Sportif, The North Face and all the other usual suspects. Outlet Village also retails golfing accessories, swimming gear (even inflatable pools) and has a small snack bar outside in the large car park.

These are the genuine items for sale at factory prices – not especially cheap for Thailand but a bargain for visitors – with the added bonus that if you spend more than 5,000 baht you can claim VAT back at the airport when you leave. But make sure that you fill out the form correctly (best ask for help at the outlet) and present the goods with receipts at the airport. You win both ways!

Opening Hours: 11:00 – 21:00
Location: Phet Kasem Road, Route 4 to the airport

Tesco Lotus

Tesco Lotus is playing the same game as Big C but in a slightly higher quality bracket. Again, the heart of the shopping mall is its supermarket which sells the same genre of goods as Big C and again many satellite shops fill the rest of the large, two-storey building. Tesco features several cosmetic boutiques as well as a hairdresser’s, two banks and ATMs, Triumph underwear outlet, camera and computer shops, a gold shop, Levi’s shop, a large sports outlet and many more small boutiques.

Those looking to snack or have a meal can avail themselves of the food court, Dunkin’ Donuts, KFC, Black Canyon and the nationwide franchise MK. For those looking for entertainment Tesco features a game centre, a karaoke room and a Thai/English Cineplex. Again, expect good parking facilities and public conveniences.

Opening Hours: 09:00 – 23:00
Location: Phet Kasem Road, Route 4 to the airport

Vogue Department Store

Vogue follows the well-trodden Thai path of cramming plenty of brand-name shops under one roof with a central supermarket, food court and fast food places. The ground floor is a hive of activity and features Boots the Chemist, cosmetic counters, Body Glove products along with Bata, a KFC, Swenson’s, Pizza Company and a gold counter. Not being a particularly large building, it’s all pretty cramped with every square centimeter used and decidedly unlike the spacious outer town shopping malls.
The two upper floors sell Levi’s, Wranglers and Lee jeans as well as underwear, rolling luggage and sports equipment.

Opening Hours: 09:00 – 21:00
Location: Maharat Road
