Krabi Town has indeed a vintage and charming touch when it comes to wander around the downtown’s ‘60s style buildings or the riverside esplanade, but in matter of shopping the Krabi Province capital is pretty far to be a shop-alcoholic’s El Dorado. Nevertheless, Krabi Town has nowadays enough shopping options to satisfy most of the basic needs.
The downtown area alone counts two fresh markets (opened every day), one weekly night market (Krabi Town Walking Street), one three-storey department store (Vogue) plus a myriad of small boutiques and, in the outskirt of the city, three large shopping malls. Check out our top 5 Krabi Town shopping list, you can find in it the most popular shopping venues available in Krabi Town.

Krabi Town Walking Street (Thanon Khon Dern in Thai) is certainly the most important shopping event in Krabi Town. It is held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 17:00 to 22:00 in Soi Maharaj 8 and on the 2,000sqm plaza situated right behind Vogue Department Store in downtown Krabi. With something like 50 stalls selling a wide range of products and street food, Krabi Town Walking Street gathers every weekend an incredibly large crowd for such a small area.
Started in 2013, this weekly event allows visitors to get a glimpse into southern Thailand life and discover local artisans and artists who come here to present their products. A night market would not be a night market in Thailand without tasty snacks to grab, so there is a multitude of Thai street food favourites to sample here while wandering around this lively market. - Opening Hours: Fri, Sat & Sun from 17:00-22:00
- Location: Soi Maharaj 8, behind Vogue Department Store
Vogue Department Store follows the well-trodden Thai path of cramming plenty of brand-name shops under one roof with a central supermarket, food court and fast food places. Located on Maharaj Road in the heart of Krabi Town, the three-storey department store (four with the shopping plaza hosted in its basement) sells all the items required (or not) for any citizen. The basement is where the cheapest products – clothes, toys, shoes, electronic gadgets, mobile phone covers – can be found, next to a karaoke-mini-rooms area and a video games arcade.
The first floor hosts promoted items in its central area, and cosmetics, gold jewellery, and accessories stalls and boutiques; KFC, Boots, The Pizza Company, Swensen’s and Watson’s outlets are also located at the first floor. The second and third floor feature all fashionable brand-names – Levi’s, Camel, Adidas, Elle, Louis Fontaine, Arrow, you name it – with women, men, and children clothes.
- Opening Hours: 09:00 – 21:00
- Location: Maharaj Road in downtown Krabi
Maharaj Market (pronounced Maharat) is also known as the ‘Morning Market’ and as the name suggests it’s a lively and active place, even before sunrise. Located in Soi 7 off Maharaj Road, it is held inside two large hangars. Maharaj Market literally never closes: it is not fully active at certain periods of time (12:00-16:00 and 21:00-04:00) but there is always something going on here.
Within the compound, it is full of exotic goods both dry and fresh; whether rice, spices, chili paste, colourful fruit, vegetables and flowers, meat, fish, seafood and more; there are also many food stands selling ready-to-eat meals and drinks at very minimal prices. Long tables between the food stands allow vendors and visitors to sit down and have their meal in relative peace in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Takeaway service is also available. Visiting Maharaj Market gives a glimpse of genuine daily-life in southern Thailand as well as opportunities to discover and sample savours unknown in the West.
- Opening Hours: Daily, best time to visit is from 08:00 – 12:00
- Location: Soi 7 off Maharaj Road in downtown Krabi
Krabi Town has many assets but is not really famous for its shopping opportunities, at least according to present international standards. Nevertheless, as the capital of the Province of Krabi it hosts three large supermarkets, all of them located a few kilometres south from the city centre, on the highway that leads to Krabi Airport, Koh Lanta and Trang. When heading south from downtown, they come in the following order: Big C, Outlet Village Krabi, and Tesco Lotus.
Big C is a ubiquitous green-and-red shopping mall found throughout Thailand. The kernel of this warehouse-sized building is the actual Big C supermarket that sells such exotica as washing machines, electronic goods, fresh and preserved food, cheap clothing, basic children’s toys and such. Big C also features a good choice of satellite shops. Tesco Lotus is playing the same game as Big C but in a slightly higher quality bracket. Again, the heart of the shopping mall is its supermarket which sells the same genre of goods as Big C and again many satellite shops fill the rest of the large, two-storey building. Outlet Village sells fashion and sportswear along with sports accessories. This is a positive goldmine for those who won’t be seen in public without name tags and agape alligators on their shirts, shoes and pants. These are the genuine items for sale at factory prices – not especially cheap for Thailand but a bargain for visitors – with the added bonus that if you spend more than 5,000 baht you can claim VAT back at the airport when you leave.
- Opening Hours: Big C and Tesco Lotus from 09:00 – 23:00; Outlet Village from 11:00 – 21:00
- Location: Phetkasem Road, Route 4 to the airport
Downtown Krabi Fresh Market is opened daily from 16:00 – 21:00 on a 2,400sqm place located Soi 10 off Maharaj Road in the heart of Krabi Town. It is a smaller market than Maharaj. It’s a typical wet market with a lot of Thai street food, flowers, fruit and some knick-knacks such as cheap plastic toys, women's clothing and fashion accessories.
This place is very popular and quite interesting to look around even though you don’t buy anything; you can sample here a great choice of local street food favourites such as kanom jeen (fresh rice noodles served with curry sauce), chicken satay and seasonal local fruits (mango, pineapple, durian, and more).
- Opening Hours: Daily, from 16:00 – 21:00
- Location: Soi 10 off Maharaj Road in downtown Krabi
