The Massaman Restaurant & Bar in Krabi

Ao Nang Restaurants & Dining

The Massaman Restaurant & Bar is a casual venue serving excellent food at fair rates on the southern road to Krabi Town in Ao Nang. The restaurant (which is also a guesthouse) is located some 500m from the beach and is flanked by Spaghetti House on its left, and a Siam Commercial Bank branch on its right.

The setting is rather simple but comfortable as The Massaman is open-air with a large covered terrace offering its customers a cool people-watching site over the busy street. Unpretentious, relaxed and reasonably priced, it is a nice place to discover the flavours of Thai cuisine.

The Massaman Restaurant & Bar is not exactly the most atmospheric restaurant around. There’s no sound of the waves lapping the shoreline, or gentle breezes softly whispering through the palms; nevertheless the down to earth and almost Spartan décor blended with the cool atmosphere of the pergola and the unobtrusive sound of Thai pop/rock music through the speakers give this venue a certain charm.

About 25 wooden tables and chairs can comfortably accommodate up to a hundred diners in a brown-and-white colour scheme with sandstone and tiled flooring. Exotic flowers and plant pots add a green touch to the terrace, bringing a tropical and natural feeling to an otherwise basic concrete building.

Food is what matters at The Massaman, and its colourfully illustrated menu has something on offer for mostly any taste. Do not be fooled by the extravagant spelling of some words (‘Appitirzers’) - orthography has nothing to do with the quality of a meal at The Massaman. The cuisine served here is typical popular fare that you would find anywhere in south Thailand at prices just a little bit higher than in less frequented destinations. From Thai salad with beef/pork/chicken at 90 baht, to pad thai with seafood/shrimp/squid at 80 baht, to tom kha with beef/pork/chicken at 90 baht, to curry coconut milk with shrimp/squid and pumpkin at 100 baht, one can discover favourite Thai dishes without breaking the bank.

In addition to the Thai menu, a few vegetarian and international dishes are also available – green curry with mixed vegetables at 70 baht, chicken breast served with salad and baguette at 180 baht, fish & chips at 160 baht, just to name a few. The drinks list has all the options necessary to quench the thirst of thirsty vacationers after a long day under the sun with a choice six bottled beers (from Chang – 50 baht, to Tiger – 60 baht, to Heineken – 70 baht), a good list of cocktails (long island ice tea – 180 baht), and the usual soft drinks, tea and coffee.
