The Last Fisherman is a tropical restaurant dream come true: set right on Ao Nang Beach – on its southern part – this bar and restaurant made of recovered materials, thatch and bamboo and driftwood (the only modern material used is the white plastic chairs), offers its punters a chill-out place at which they can dine with their toes in the sand under the shade of coconut and tropical almond trees.
The Last Fisherman is certainly not a fine-dining venue, but it serves pretty decent food – western snacks, Thai favourites, and daily barbecue in the evening – as well as a great choice of excellent cocktails that are highly appreciated while things are cooling down at sunset time.

In Ao Nang, The Last Fisherman starts where the road stops; there’s almost no way that you can miss its entrance – a red brick gate with thatch roof - as it marks the end of the beach road when heading south. Set on a 1,200sqm land, the restaurant is mostly open air (just a few tables and seats are available the two ‘huts’ sheltering the bar and the kitchen). About 25 wooden tables are on the beach, in-between the trees and the beautifully carved totem poles decorating the restaurant.
‘Chill-out’, ’relax’, and ‘cool’ are the three words that best describe the atmosphere at The Last Fisherman. The staff is attentive to customers and the service is pretty correct; despite the difficulty to walk in the sand, zigzagging between the trees, waiters sport a perma-smile while serving.
The Last Fisherman’s menu is colourful and well thought-out in the way it is organized with a clear separate sections for cocktails, smoothies & shakes, ice-creams, lunch and dinner items. The lunch section has all the standard sandwiches (from 100 to 180 baht), salads (from 100 to 180 baht), burgers (from 160 to 200 baht) and Thai dishes (from 80 to 180 baht); and the barbecue dinner section presents four set menus – from BBQ Mini-set at 400 baht (one piece of chicken/pork/beef/sausage/fish filet/prawn or squid on stick, baked potato, corn on the cob, salad, and dessert of the day) to BBQ Combo Set at 1,600 baht (for two: six pieces of chicken/pork/beef/sausage/fish filet/prawn or squid on stick, two baked potatoes, two pieces of corn on the cob, salad, and dessert of the day).
The drinks list features a great deal of classic and original beverages including healthy smoothies (immune-building, de-stressing, energy boost, purify-detox, and body beauty at 95 baht), ‘alcoholic smoothies’ such as a ‘Bailey Smoothie’, ‘Chocolate Black Russian’ or ‘Watermelon Tequila’ at 200 baht; and an impressive list of 73 (!) cocktails, from the classic James Bond vodka-martini at 160 baht to the original ‘The Last Fisherman’ (vodka, Thai rum, triple-sec, grenadine, orange juice, pineapple juice, and lime juice) at 220 baht. With such a list, along with a beautiful sunset, one is indeed in a tropical paradise cliché at The Last Fisherman, and why not?
